ROAD TO 2010 - THE THIRD PHASE E-mail
Written by Jake Brown

And then there were 20! The second phase of qualifying for the 2010 African Nations Cup and World Cup is done and dusted. The twelve group winners and the 8 best placed runners up have made it through to the third and final phase of qualification. Their seedings for the next phase will be:

First seeds - Egypt, Ghana, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Cameroon.
Second seeds - Morocco, Tunisia, Mali, Algeria, Guinea.
Third seeds - Burkina Faso, Gabon, Zambia, Kenya, Benin.
Fourth seeds - Rwanda, Togo, Mozambique, Sudan, Malawi.

For the rest it's a long and loney wait for competitve international football. It'll be two years without a competitive fixture for the majority of them. Fans in Senegal, Libya and across the continent will be looking on enviously as the rest do battle. 2010 hosts Angola and South Africa will be counting their lucky stars that they qualify automatically after missing the cut.

The draw for the next round of qualifiers will be made on October 22nd in Zurich. The draws for the third stage will see the top seeds each heading a group to be composed of four teams each. The winner of each group will qualify automatically for the 2010 World Cup, while the top three teams would head to the African Nations Cup in Angola.
