Several African teams were in action on Wednesday night in international friendlies, which many were using as preparation for the final phase of 2010 World Cup qualifying.

EGYPT 2-2 GHANA, CAIRO

The pick of the night's games was in Cairo, where African champions Egypt played out a thrilling to-and-fro encounter with visitors Ghana.

The Pharaohs took the lead after 40 minutes through Middlesbrough midfielder Mohamed Shawky.

The Black Stars equalised just seven minutes into the second half when a cross hit Hani Said on the arm and the penalty was converted by Stephen Appiah.

The clubless midfielder also featured in Ghana's second with 12 minutes left as his shot rebounded off goalkeeper Essam Al Hadary for Prince Tagoe to slot home the rebound.

But the home side managed to hit back six minutes from time when striker Emad Moteab controlled a loose ball and beat goalkeeper Richard Kingson from close range.

NIGERIA 0-0 JAMAICA, LONDON

Nigeria coach Shuaibu Amodu insisted his side's goalless draw against Jamaica in London had served its purpose as a useful warm-up for their World Cup and Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.

"First and foremost, we had an opportunity to come together as a team," he said.

"We came together as a family and we can project a lot of qualities."

Nigeria dominated for spells in the second half and had their chances, the best coming from two Ike Uche headers.

The game was overshadowed by an incident two minutes before half-time when Jermaine Johnson seemed to shove linesman Darren Cann after squaring up to Nigeria's Taye Taiwo. The two were sent off.

"As Arsene Wenger says, I didn't see it," said Jamaica coach John Barnes.

SOUTH AFRICA 0-2 CHILE, POLOKWANE

The 2010 World Cup hosts' five-match winning streak ended with a 2-0 home defeat to Chile.

Jorge Valdivia and Alexis Sanchez scored a goal in each half to seal victory for the South American side.

The home side, meanwhile, were left to rue missed chances and defensive errors.

Striker Benni McCarthy saw his powerful header from a Teko Modise cross easily saved by Chile goalkeeper Claudio Bravo in the first half.

He then hit the upright from inside the box on 57 minutes after Bravo had parried Tsepo Masilela's ball into his path.

It's now a case of back to the drawing board for Joel Santana's team - who are already out of the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying - as they prepare for their next friendly against Norway in Rustenburg at the end of March.

The defeat did not surprise the Bafana Bafana coach, however.

"Chile had a very strong team who know what to do out on the field," he said.

"They made us hurry through everything. It was a good friendly for us. These are the type of games we need and we have to apply now what we have learnt."

TURKEY 1-1 IVORY COAST, IZMIR

Chelsea striker Didier Drogba grabbed an injury-time equaliser for the visitors after the Elephants had trailed for much of the match.

Turkish striker Gokhan Unal put the home side ahead after 11 minutes with a superb powerful shot from the edge of the box into the roof of the net.

Drogba was making only his second international appearance in a year, after playing a friendly against Israel in November.

The Ivorians had plenty of opportunities, a number of which fell to Drogba, which he failed to convert.

But two minutes into added time he met a deep cross from the right to tap home the equaliser at the far post.

TUNISIA 1-1 HOLLAND

Humberto Coelho's side came from a goal down to earn a creditable draw at home to Holland in Rades.

Klaas-Jan Huntelaar had put the Dutch ahead on 62 minutes, but Jamel Saihi struck just four minutes later to level the score, in just the third meeting between the sides.

MOROCCO 0-0 CZECH REPUBLIC

The hosts performed well, despite being unable to find a breakthrough, and there were debuts for Mounir El Hamdaoui, the top scorer in Holland, as well as Adel Taraabt of Spurs.

Talal El Karkouri also used the match to come out of international retirement.

CAMEROON 3-1 GUINEA

Spain's top scorer Samuel Eto'o continued his rich vein of form by hitting two for the Indomitable Lions. Geremi opened the scoring before Barcelona's lethal marksman made it 2-0.

Pascal Feindouno pulled one back, before Eto'o made it 3-1 in the 87th minute.

ANGOLA 0-4 MALI

The 2010 Africa Cup of Nations hosts suffered a thumping defeat at the hands of Mali in Paris.

Frederic Kanoute was on the scoresheet for the Malians, adding to strikes from Soumaila Coulibaly, Moustapha Yatabare and Sidi Keita.

MOZAMBIQUE 2-0 MALAWI

Mart Nooij's team warmed up for a tough qualifying group with a two-goal victory in Maputo.

Dario Monteiro opened the scoring on 30 minutes, before Elias 'Domingues' Pelembe added a second in the final minute against a Malawi side who are also through to the final round of qualifying.

ALGERIA 2-1 BENIN

The north African side hit two in the first half courtesy of Abdelkader Ghezzal and Kamel Ghilas, before Benin's Abou Maiga pulled one back five minutes from time.

BURKINA FASO 1-1 TOGO

Togo came back from a goal down to earn a draw, despite the absence of injured Arsenal striker Emmanuel Adebayor, who was crowned 2008 Caf African Footballer of the Year in Lagos on Tuesday.

Jonathan Pitroipa gave the Burkinabe Stallions a first half lead but defender Senah Mango levelled 13 minutes from time in Petit-Quevilly in France.
